How OwlFocus Works — The Magic of Window Blur

Welcome to the OwlFocus mini-class! OwlFocus’s big eyes have a special magic: they can blur your windows, helping you focus, like this:

Blur beforeBefore

Blur afterAfter

How does OwlFocus do it? Let’s start focusing!

Stacking windows like books

Imagine stacking a pile of books one by one. macOS works similarly—it stacks windows, with the topmost window being the active one. When there are too many windows, your desktop looks messy. What would you do? Move windows around? Close them one by one? No—OwlFocus just opens its eyes and blurs all windows except the one you’re actively using. How does it do it?

Taking snapshots

The first idea OwlFocus came up with was taking snapshots. It takes a camera, stands under the topmost window, snaps a picture, applies blur, and then places the blurred image beneath the top window. Well done! Now you see the active window and the blurred overlay. But there’s a small problem—the blurred overlay is static. OwlFocus would need to move, take another snapshot, then another… as fast as the Flash, you’d get a dynamic blur overlay. Sounds great? OwlFocus gets exhausted lying on the floor…

Recording video

The second idea was recording. OwlFocus grabs a video recorder, stands under the top window, continuously records, applies blur, and sends the blurred frames under the top window. Great! Now you see a dynamic blur overlay, and OwlFocus doesn’t need to keep flying around. Sounds amazing? OwlFocus’s recorder starts heating up…

Transparent glass layer

The third idea was a semi-transparent glass layer. OwlFocus finds a piece of semi-transparent glass and places it under the topmost window. Well done! Now you see a dynamic blur layer. What is OwlFocus doing? It gives you a thumbs-up.👍

At the end

OwlFocus achieves window blur using a transparent glass layer. Sometimes the simplest method is the most effective, and OwlFocus makes it happen! Now let’s start focusing!
